Construction Update
Last updated 8/12/16

• August 3, 2016, update from the Construction Manager
For the start of classes on Monday, August 15th, here are the expectations for completion of work. We have cleaners from the Contractor side coming through to clear out the remaining construction-related work. To provide clean classrooms for the start of school, we also have District cleaners who will follow through after teachers have set up their rooms.

In the Annex Building:
— Phase 9 classrooms are ready for occupancy.
Library is scheduled to be completed this weekend and will be set up week of August 8th.
Library courtyard work will take place during school.
All other bathrooms were completed in previous phase.
Upper Play Yard will be 95% paved and usable for first day of school. Playground striping will be added at a later date.
Lower Play Yard is also paved at 90%. There is a portion of work remaining for fencing,
but this does not affect the overall use of the rest of the yard.
All other areas were previously completed.

 In the Main Building:
Classrooms on the 2nd floor are completed. One remaining classroom will be finished this weekend and ready for
set-up on August 8th.
Pre-K rooms are being completed this week.
Wellness Center was turned over last semester and will be cleaned and ready for use.
Admin rooms will be completed this week and ready for set-up on August 8th.
PTOT Office and Exterior Restrooms at play yard are scheduled to be completed by August 15th.
Multipurpose Room / Cafeteria will be completed by August 8th.
All other bathrooms were completed in a previous phase.
Both Main Building entrances will be open when school starts.
Site work remaining at the start of school will be limited to work along Folsom Street, next to the Contractor office trailer.
All other areas were previously completed.

Both buildings:
Elevators and Wheel Chair Lifts are scheduled to be completed and functional by the end of September.
There will be Punchlist items that need to be completed during the school year, but the classrooms should all be ready for use by the start of school.

Paul Revere construction has been impacted by unforeseen site building conditions. In spite of the challenges, the contractor is working hard to make construction activities happen near original schedule. Currently the impacts to the school community and the neighborhood are:
—
Main Building along the Banks Street side: The school bus stop and sidewalk relocation remain necessary because of the structural work that goes into the sidewalk through the end of the school year.
— Annex Building: Entry continues to be through the Annex Upper Yard into the middle stairwell through the end of school year.
— Main Building's Upper Yard: Interim housing buildings (aka temporary/portable classrooms) will be removed starting June 6th. Residents along the transport path
(see below map) will not be able to park during this week as contractors work to safely off-haul these units from the site.
— Playgrounds: None will be accessible this summer, due to construction work.

Street closures and move-out route for the temporary/portable classrooms,
which are scheduled to be removed from the Main Building's Upper Yard
beginning on June 6, 2016 (click to enlarge map).

March 21, 2016
— Seismic shear wall drilling will begin starting March 23 and will continue until April 3 barring any unforeseen conditions. This activity is scheduled for 12 days and will happen during the day and into the evening hours to shorten the overall duration as much as possible. While we understand the disruption will be impactful to both school and neighborhood activities, it is necessary in order to stay on schedule to complete all activities required for the start of Fall 2016 classes.
— Everything else previously noted still applies to this update.

• March 2, 2016

1. Starting Friday, March 11, the main entry into the Annex Building will be accessed through the Upper Yard Playground and through the middle stairs. The temporary offices will be located in 109 and 110. There will be signage posted for pedestrians to follow.

2. Major demolition work has started this week and will continue for a couple weeks until all of the concrete planter walls and sidewalk areas have been removed to make way for the expansion of the Main Building. These are heavy noise-generating activities that will occur after hours.

3. Bus stop relocation from Main Building at Banks has now moved down to Annex Building remaining on Banks St.

• Week of January 18, 2016
At the Main Building:

Exterior work continues on both Banks Street and Folsom Street for new structural sheer walls.
Parking and bus routing has not changed since our last post and is normally routed. The contractor expects to change this at the end of January.
(Please see the below plan for reference.)
Excavation will start in early February on Banks Street for the expansion of the administrative areas and classrooms.
We will have to relocate the sidewalk into the bus zone temporarily during the excavation and while the buildout is being constructed. The contractor will post a notification when this occurs.
On the interior, work on the classrooms and administrative offices is progressing nicely. A portion of this work is scheduled to be occupied in February for some of the administrative staff. The opening of the classrooms will come at a later time.

At the Annex Building:
The sheer wall micropiles are now completed beneath the building.
The area shaded in pink along Banks Street in the below plan is now available again for general parking. The remainder of the street space is unchanged at this time.
Heaters have been installed into the classrooms for the duration of construction. The contractor has also closed off vents in the stairwells to mitigate outside drafts from coming into the building.
Indoor PE Lab and Computer Lab spaces are continuing in their progress and are scheduled to be completed in February.

• Week of January 4, 2016
At the Main Building:

Exterior work continues at the Main Building for new structural sheer walls. This is true on both Banks Street and Folsom Street.
Parking and bus routing has not changed since our last post and is normally routed. The contractor expects to change this at the end of January.
(Please see the below plan for reference.)
Excavation will start in the coming weeks on Banks Street for the buildout of the two new classrooms going in this area.
We will have to relocate the sidewalk into the bus zone temporarily during the excavation and while the buildout is being constructed. The contractor will post a notification when this occurs.
On the interior, classroom work is progressing nicely. This portion of work is scheduled to be occupied in February.
– The new administrative suite is currently being framed out and progressing well.

At the Annex Building:
The sheer wall micropiles are continuing beneath the building and is scheduled to continue for another week.
The area shaded in pink along Banks Street is roped off for contractor parking and equipment access into the basement level space. The remainder of the street space is unchanged at this time.
Heaters have been installed into the classrooms for the duration of construction
Indoor PE Lab and Computer Lab spaces are continuing in their progress and are scheduled to be completed in February.

• Week of December 16, 2015
– The only change to the below is that the Banks Street bus zone changes have not taken effect. The area shown in magenta below is still open to public parking. The Main Building will still have its bus loading where it has always been. The change will not take effect until after the new year.
– After Friday, December 18, school will be out and there will be work happening over winter break. Contractors are scheduled to do drilling for new structural elements that will likely have noise impacts for residents around the Annex Building. Structural work is still happening along the exterior of the Main Building on sides facing the street (as apparent with scaffold draped in plastic).

• Week of November 23, 2015
The following are the changes that will need to be implemented to accommodate construction at the Main Building:
– The sidewalk along Banks Street will be temporarily closed off due to construction and a temporary walkway at the street will be in place.
Starting Monday, November 30, the bus stop along Banks Street will be relocated to the Annex Side and the bus flow will need to go the opposite direction in order to accommodate curbside pickup.
Tompkins Avenue will return to normal with existing bus stop and public parking.
Here is a map of the new bus routes starting Monday, November 30:

Temporary bus route, starting Nov 30 (click to enlarge map).

– The rest of construction in the interior of the buildings are as reported in most recent update (below). The changes noted above will be in effect until the end of the year.

• Week of November 9, 2015
At the Main Building:
Outside sheer walls along Folsom Street are still continuing through to the end of the month.
The Second floor is nearly completed.
Classroom work will be shifting from Banks Street side to Folsom Street side.
– The Administration suite along Banks Street has all been moved at this point and settled into their interim spaces.
– Excavation work along Banks Street along with interior demo will begin in the coming weeks.
– Classrooms facing Banks Street will go into construction starting late next week after the move.

At the Annex Building:
– Crews are continuing work in the Indoor PE Lab and Computer Labs as well as structural foundation work.

• Week of September 21, 2015
– Now actively working on the structural sheer walls along Folsom Street; sidewalks will be impacted from time to time.
– Also still working on all of the areas listed in the Aug 31 update (below).

• Week of August 31, 2015
– Main Building's elevator shaft and pit are under construction.
– Annex Building's elevator pit and shaft walls' construction are ongoing.
–
Main Building's classrooms and indoor PE/play room's walls are being framed.

About the Project and Prop A

At Paul Revere's dual campus, a major renovation and modernization effort began in May 2015 and will continue through the summer of 2016.  The construction is a massive $12M project being funded by the SFUSD Bond Program, more commonly known as "Prop A."  In 2003, San Francisco voters approved Proposition A, which allowed the City to issue almost $300M in bonds, the proceeds going to modernizing and retrofitting school facilities, creating green schoolyards, and increasing ADA compliance at school sites.
Three rounds of Prop A funding have been approved: one in 2003, one in 2006, and one in 2011 (this last one is funding our school's renovation).  If you're interested in learning more, the Citizens Bond Oversight Committee was created when the bond measure was passed, and the committee oversees the administration of the bond fund and reports where the money is going.
It's been a long time coming, but Paul Revere is finally being renovated!  The District's building plans were approved in late February 2015 by the State Architects Board, and the construction bidding process occurred in early Spring
The construction work started just before the summer of 2015 (with portables being dropped in early May 2015—see below), will run throughout the 2015–2016 school year, and is scheduled to wrap up around the end of the summer of 2016 (possibly as late as September). Our school will remain open during construction; because of our dual campus and 5 yards, we have enough room to host portable classrooms, which students are moving into when their regular classroom is under construction.

Community Involvement

This project is obviously very large in scope, and it will cause some disruption to not only the day-to-day activities in the school but also to the surrounding neighborhood.  In an effort to keep everyone informed, Paul Revere's School Site Council (SSC) has held community meetings to gather input and concerns from all who will be impacted by this project.

Community Meeting #1 - January 16th, 2014 - for Revere families and neighbors

Community Meeting #2 - May 15th, 2014 - for Revere families

Community Meeting #3 - February 26th, 2015 - Presentation at PTA meeting for Revere families

Community Meeting #4 - July 9th, 2015 - Presentation at Bernal Heights Library at request of Banks Street neighbors

Community Meeting #5 - TBD if needed

The Plans

PLUM Architects is the firm that the District engaged to draw up the renovation plans.  PLUM has worked on many school renovations (including Miraloma), so they have deep experience in the intricacies of state building and education codes.  At both our January 2014 and our May 2014 community meetings, PLUM was on hand to present the plans for the school.  Here are the plans they presented (now approved by the State Architects Board):

3D renderings of the Main Building's new sheer walls (click to enlarge plans)

The Main Building, 1st and 2nd floors: Our Pre-K classrooms will move to the 1st floor of the Main Building,
while Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades will have a new home on the 2nd floor.
Where our Library used to be, there will be a new Indoor Play Area.
More new rooms: Music Room, Wellness Clinic, Parents' Room, After-School Room, and Snack-Prep Room
will be on the 1st floor.

Annex Building, Basement: Currently one of our Pre-K classrooms is in this area, but after the renovation
the ground-level "basement" will be the site of our school's Library (with a lovely garden and outdoor reading area),
a Math and Science Lab, and an Indoor PE Area.

Annex Building, 1st floor:  The 1st floor will house our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classrooms after the renovation.

Annex Building, 2nd floor: The 2nd floor will house our Middle School, where our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will go to school.

Main Building, Play Yards: The Lower Yard will consist of two play structures (one for PreK, and one for K-2nd), a tricycle track, and more. The Upper Yard will host PE classes and be available for play during Recess. A ramp as well as stairs will connect the two yards. We also hope to add as many trees and planting spaces as possible.

Annex Building, Play Yards: The Upper Yard will contain a play structure for 3rd-5th grades as well as ball-game space. In the Lower Yard, we plan to add a soccer field (artificial turf, as the District will not pay for grass maintenance).  We also hope to add as many trees and planting spaces as possible—including in the Library courtyard (visible in lower right corner of above drawing).

The Finishes

Here are some pictures of the finishes that will be part of Revere's renovation and modernization project:

Pre-Construction Updates and General Project Info
Last updated 4/30/15

May 1 11, 2015: Contractor will place two or three trailers on-site and on city streets to accommodate construction offices and storage. (Contractor was awarded final contract with Notice to Proceed on April 28.)

May 8, 2015: Basketball hoops will be removed from Main Building's Upper Yard.

May 11–12 18, 2015: Eight portable classrooms will be moved onto the Main Building’s Upper Yard. Banks Street will be closed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on these dates to enable the large portable classrooms to be navigated down the street and onto the Upper Yard. As soon as the two deliveries are complete each day, the residential side of Banks will reopen. Notice of street closure and posting of permits will happen early in the week of May 4.

• Summer 2015 construction: Banks and Folsom will be busy with construction deliveries, pick-ups, and off-hauls.

• All students will remain in their classrooms until the end of the spring 2015 semester. Students will attend school at Revere during construction, moving into portables while their classroom is being remodeled. The first classrooms to move will be grades 5th-8th, which will begin the 2015–2016 school year in portables.

The Cafeteria kitchen will remain open serving hot lunches (and supper for after-school programs) through the end of the 2014–2015 school year and is projected to re-open in time for the start of the fall 2016 semester.

• Students will attend school at Revere during construction, moving into these portables while their usual classroom is being remodeled (some schools close or bus students off-site during construction, but Revere will remain open).

• Our school buildings will be renovated, modernized, and strengthened against earthquakes.

• We’ll add a music room, indoor play/PE rooms, new library and courtyard, general science room, snack-prep area, and more (see above plans).

• Our school will be made more accessible: An elevator will be added to each building; a chair lift will be added to the Cafeteria stage; and a ramp will be added between the Main Yards (see above plans).

• Our fire and life safety systems, school bells, phone lines, and wifi will be updated.

All of our play yards will be renovated, with new play structures and as much greening as possible (see above plans, which will evolve as we enter the 2-year greening Master Planning process in the fall of 2015).
